Description
Maryhill House, originally an early 19th century residence, was significantly altered and expanded in 1866 by architects A and W Reid. This large building features a raised basement, two storeys, and an attic, with a three-bay front elevation. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone with ornate polished ashlar dressings, while the raised basement is made of coursed rubble. The central bay is advanced and includes a further advanced porch, flanked by canted bay windows, with rectangular bay windows on the east and west sides. A string course connects the window cills on the first floor, which are topped with enriched segmental-headed pediments. Each bay window and the central bay are adorned with pierced stone balustrades that support ornate urns. There are two segmental-headed dormers on the east and west sides, along with two modern dormers on the front. The building is capped with a piended slate roof and features two groups of octagonal chimney stacks, each containing seven stacks arranged symmetrically.
At the rear, there are extensive modern additions that are not of interest. The property is enclosed by rubble garden walls topped with dressed stone copes. Additionally, there is a single span elliptical arched footbridge designed by Alexander Reid in 1866-67, featuring a pierced cast-stone balustrade and panelled end piers with stone finials.
