Description
Dr Gray's Hospital, located on Pluscarden Road in Elgin, was designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1815 and 1819. This classical building features a three-storey, nine-bay facade made of polished ashlar stone, characterized by a giant pilastered design. The facade includes a Roman Doric tetrastyle portico that supports an entablature and a bold panelled parapet. The central entrance is set at the top of steps and features a wide panel with a fanlight above it. The giant pilasters in the outer bays support the entablature and a die balustrade. The second-floor windows have been enlarged to break the frieze, and the building has 12-pane sash windows.
Above and behind the portico, there is an octagonal stage with pedimented clock faces on alternating elevations. This stage supports a drum with louvred bull's eyes, a copper dome, and a crowning cupola. The interior of the hospital was modernized around 1980.
