Description
The Education Offices at 33 Spittal Street in Stirling were likely designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1825 and originally served as a classical bank before being converted for use as an infirmary by Peddie and Kinnear in 1874.
This substantial building is two stories high and features five main bays, which extend to eleven bays at the outer edges. It is constructed from ashlar sandstone and has windows with lugged architraves and cornices, as well as an entablature and a blocking course. There is a cill band course at the first floor level of the extension, and fluted angle pilasters above the first floor.
On the principal elevation facing Spittal Street, the central five bays are slightly advanced, with the outer bays framed by pilasters. The central three bays feature a full-height pedimented portico supported by fluted Tuscan columns. The entrance door is located in the center and is topped with a border-glazed fanlight. Access to the portico is via a short flight of seven steps. The fenestration is regular, with the outer three bays also regularly fenestrated and fluted pilasters at the first floor.
The west elevation includes a three-stage square tower that breaks the wall head at or near the center. There is a door on the return with a lugged and banded surround, a deep moulded cornice, and tripartite windows at the ground level of the tower and the outer right bay.
The south (rear) elevation shows extensions and extensive alterations. The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane and plate glass glazing. There are flat-roofed classical dormers behind the blocking course, grey slate roofing, and a wall-head stack on the later tower. A flagpole is positioned at the apex of the pediment, and decorative guttering features a dated hopper from 1910.
The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1997.
