Description

Snowdon School for Girls, located at 31 Spittal Street in Stirling, is a former school building designed by J W & J Hay from Liverpool in 1855. This early Gothic, two-storey structure features a U-shaped plan and has four bays. The exterior is constructed from part stone-cleaned squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and includes droved surfaces, chamfered arrises, and trefoil-headed windows. There is a base course at the bottom of the walls.

On the north elevation, the central bays are slightly recessed and framed by advanced outer gables. A door is located in the bay to the right of the centre, set within a re-entrant angle, and features a pointed arch lintel in a pointed arched recess. The door is bordered with decorative ironwork and is accessed by a short flight of steps. Above this, a turret is corbelled out from the flanking gable, topped with an octagonal belfry head that has trefoil-headed openings on each face. The roof is tall, polygonal, and slated. To the left of the turret, there is a small single light, while the bay to the left of centre contains small square-headed lights at ground level and an altered window on the first floor.

The advanced outer bays include, on the left, paired bipartite windows below and a stepped tripartite window above. On the right, there is a single light and tripartite windows below, along with a stepped five-light window with a relieving arch below.

The south elevation shows extensions and extensive alterations to the rear of the building.

The interior was not seen in 1997.

The boundary walls and gatepiers are made of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar saddleback coping. The square ashlar gatepiers have chamfered arrises and pyramidal caps, with one pier incised with the name 'Snowdon School'.

The north elevation features leaded glazing with diamond and square panes, while the rear has timber sash and case windows with plate glass and small-pane glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slate.
