Friars House, 11 Institution Road, Elgin

Friars House, located at 11 Institution Road in Elgin, is a tall, two-storey house built around 1860 by A and W Reid. It features a raised basement and has a symmetrical façade with three bays, including a central door. The exterior is constructed of tooled ashlar with polished or tooled ashlar dressings.

The house is adorned with a classical portico supported by a pair of Roman Doric columns and engaged pilasters, which is accessed by a flight of stairs that oversails the raised basement. There are canted bay windows flanking the basement and ground floor, while the first-floor windows have raised margins linked by a cill band. Additional architectural details include deep eaves, rusticated quoins, and 4-pane glazing. The chimney stacks are symmetrically placed and consist of two batteries of six with linked cornices. The roof is a shallow piended slate design.

The property is complemented by a rubble garden wall topped with dressed stone coping, and it features three tooled ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps.
