War Memorial, High Street, Tranent

The War Memorial on High Street in Tranent was designed by T Aikman Swan in 1923 to commemorate those who served in the First World War, featuring Arts and Crafts details. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with bull-faced rubble at the base. The memorial has a square base that is inscribed, likely around 1945, with the dates 1939-1945 and includes a plaque listing the names of those honored.

Above the base is an octagonal moulded pedestal that bears a dedication. The memorial features a tapering octagonal shaft with a moulded base, which includes a carved pelican feeding its young on the south side. The shaft is adorned with a variety of floral and sylvan carvings on its four cavetto moulded faces, and it is topped with a thistle wreath at the capital. The shaft is finished with a cross finial that is hung with a wreath and features ornately carved headers.

Surrounding the memorial is a simple wrought-iron enclosure.
