Description

Dated 1928, the Tranent Infant School is a single-story building arranged in a U-shape, with a central hall projecting to the north. Its design incorporates Gibbsian architectural details, reflecting a classical influence. The school is constructed primarily of red brick, with a harled base course and cream sandstone ashlar dressings and eaves course, accented by diamond motifs within the gableheads. Timber mullions and transoms feature in the bipartite and tripartite windows.

The north range’s hall is the focal point, presenting a near-symmetrical facade. A large, keystoned, segmentally arched window dominates the north elevation, above which is a dated circular panel set in the gablehead. A square porch is adjoined to the west return, featuring a keystoned door within an ashlar panel and a sunray fanlight. Tall bipartite windows are present on the hall's east and west returns. Gabled bays are situated within the re-entrant angles, with a segmentally arched and keystoned window to the left bay and a bipartite window to the right. Pedimented ashlar doorways, flanked by pilasters, are set in the re-entrant angles, while tall tripartite windows are located in the outer bays, breaking the eaves with gabled dormerheads. A flat-roofed square projection extends from the east return.

The south elevation has ten symmetrical bays, with gabled dormerheads over the centre and penultimate bays. The centre pair of bays share a single gable upon which a voussoired clock is set. Flat-roofed dormerheads join the windows flanking the centre.

The west range and pavilion feature an irregular elevation with windows breaking eaves in gableheads, consistent with the detailing elsewhere. A flat-roofed porch is recessed within the re-entrant angle formed with the end pavilion, which has five windows on its south elevation, with dormerheads over the penultimate windows. A flat-roofed corridor-loggia runs along the playground elevation, supported by brick piers and featuring glazed timber infills and doors in the end bays. Clerestory windows are situated under the eaves of the main range.

The east range exhibits an irregular layout, mirroring the detailing of the west range but without a porch or a pavilion. The south elevation displays three bays with a gabled dormerhead over the centre window. The playground elevation incorporates a corridor-loggia similar to that on the west side, terminating in penultimate bay to the south with a pair of doors on its return.

Large-pane glazing is the predominant pattern in the top-hopper windows, with smaller panes in the upper top-hoppers. The roof is bell-cast and covered with grey slates.

Original interior details have been preserved, including boarded dadoes, heated coat rails with integrated radiators, an enamel-tiled washroom with low sinks and brass taps, and brass door fittings.

Decorative wrought-iron gates are flanked by three pairs of corniced ashlar gatepiers and low, ashlar-coped, harled rubble retaining walls to the north. Two three-bay gabled shelters, with cast-iron columns and original iron roofs, mark the playground boundaries.
