Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 23 Bridge Street in Tranent, is a classical bank and bank manager's house built in the later 19th century. It is a two-storey building with three bays, featuring a grey sandstone ashlar frontage, with squared and coursed stonework on the sides and rear. The design includes a base course, rusticated quoins, and an eaves cornice.
On the south elevation, there is a central doorway with an architraved surround and an ornately carved consoled pediment, leading to two-leaf panelled doors. The flanking bays at ground level have tripartite architraved windows with semi-circular pediments that break the cornice above the central light. The first-floor windows have decorative cill brackets and consist of a single window at the centre and bipartite windows in the outer bays. A flat-roofed dormer addition, which is slate hung, is also present.
The west elevation features a bipartite window at ground level on the left and two widely spaced windows on the first floor. The east elevation is abutted by the East Lothian Co-operative building.
The building has plate glass glazing in the sash and case windows, overhanging eaves on the piend roofs covered with grey slates, and corniced end stacks. A decorative gutterhead is also retained.
