Description
The Bishop Burton War Memorial is a structure commemorating the First World War, built in 1922 by Messrs Temple Moore & Moore. It is made of ashlar sandstone.
The memorial features a tall cross set on a stepped octagonal and square pedestal, which is raised on a four-stepped octagonal base. The cross faces east-west and has a simple design with a tall, chamfered, and tapering shaft. The octagonal pedestal supports the cross and is placed on a larger square pedestal that has projecting square panels on each face, which are not inscribed. The square pedestal has a chamfered octagonal plinth and rests on an octagonal pedestal with alternating flat and stepped faces. Attached to the flat, south-facing side of the pedestal is a stone panel that records the names of the men who died, although this panel is not accessible. The entire structure is elevated on a high octagonal base consisting of four steps.
A plaque mentioned in the historical context was erected in 2014 and is excluded from the listing due to its recent age.
