Description

The Hightown War Memorial is a First World War memorial, created before 1927 by Trenwith Wills, featuring sculptural work by Herbert Tyson Smith. It consists of a tall, tapering cenotaph made of mellow red brick with sandstone dressings and slate plaques, set on a hexagonal platform that includes four shallow stair flights on the north, south, east, and west sides.

The cenotaph has a brick and ashlar base, with a tapering shaft above made of rusticated brickwork. At the top, it is crowned by a carved sandstone figure of a kneeling angel, who is placing a wreath while bowing its head and folding its wings. Each face of the shaft features a slate panel framed in ashlar, with raised heads and incised inscriptions highlighted in red.

The east face is particularly detailed, showcasing a large carved relief of the Royal crest on a shield, flanked by draped flags, sword hilts, and Brodie helmets, with a large unadorned cross positioned above and behind. The inscription on the east face reads "THEIR NAME/ LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE," with the dates "1914-1919" carved on the base below. The plaques on the north and south faces list the names of those who were lost, while the plaque on the rear west face also bears names, along with the dates "1939-1945" carved below.
