Description

3 Millhill at Musselburgh Racecourse is an 1886 single-sided racecourse stand designed by McDermont and Murdoch. It features a near symmetrical facade with 24 bays, three panelled dormers above a glazed canopy roof section, and four bellcast capped roof ventilators topped with weathervanes. The stand has multi-pane glazing with cross detail timber panelling below, along with some recessed spaces under the glazed canopy supported by cast iron roof trusses and scalloped timber detailing at the eaves. The walls are brick at the ends and in the central underpend, with asphalt steps leading up. The rear (south) elevation is plainer, featuring round arched window and door openings on the ground floor and windows on the upper floor. The brickwork extends to the first floor eaves course, with white render above. A late 20th century glazed flat roof bar extension is located on the left side.

The north elevation has timber framed glazing and partition divisions, while the south features replacement double glazing. The roof is slate with an open canopy supported by cast iron brackets and timber bargeboards.

Inside, the space has been largely modernised to create a series of recreational and hospitality areas. Several bar areas and a kitchen overlook the racecourse along the internal upper floor of the stand.
