Description
The Main Stand at Perth Racecourse, located in Scone Palace Park, was built around 1908. It is a two-storey, near symmetrical structure with 12 bays, featuring a glazed canopy, a central pediment with a clock, and open timber terracing. The stand overlooks the racecourse to the southwest and is constructed of timber with metal segmental arches above each bay. There are some balconies that have continuous timber balustrades surrounding them. A later two-storey extension and a covered stair have been added to the rear, on the northeast side.
The southwest elevation, or front, has central recessed, non-traditional part-glazed leaf doors at the ground level that lead into the interior of the stand, flanked by solid timber balustrades. Open terracing is present on both the right and left sides, with solid timber balustrades separating the sections. Each bay on the upper storey features three-part screens with timber aprons, plate glass in the center, and three-light top hoppers, all set behind metal segmental arches. There are also some two-leaf part-glazed timber doors that lead to the balconies.
The roof is covered with grey slates and features four decorative ridge vents. The front of the stand has predominantly timber fixed and top-hopper windows, while the rear has non-traditional replacement windows.
Inside, as seen in 2013, the original layout remains largely intact. It includes open, timber-lined bar areas and several individual timber-lined viewing boxes that overlook the racecourse.
