Description

The County Stand at York Racecourse is a racecourse stand built around 1840, with some early 20th-century alterations and extensions. It is constructed from cast iron and timber, featuring a boarded awning supported by iron trusses and a slate hipped roof with wide eaves held up by timber brackets.

The exterior presents a two-storey front with 11 bays, arranged in two tiers of segmental arches supported by twisted columns with floral capitals on tall pedestals. The spandrels are decorated with openwork arabesques. The lower tier is open at the front, with eight bays featuring a curved awning that has a scalloped valance above. The upper tier is adorned with an ornate balustrade made of cast-iron openwork panels.

Inside, the lower tier is stepped and fitted with wooden bench seats. A rear partition wall includes glazed and panelled doors along with coat pegs. Behind this wall, there is a close string staircase with substantial turned balusters and a shaped handrail on square sunk-panel newels topped with ball and pedestal finials. Both tiers are finished with moulded cornices.
