Description
Office and transit/recreation room, built 1924–30, designed by architects J G Davies and L E Wade for Terry's of York chocolate manufacturers.
The building is constructed in red brick laid in English bond with sandstone ashlar dressings. It has two storeys, a flat concrete and asphalt roof, and is designed in the Baroque Revival style.
The facade facing the entrance road and headquarters block features a central single-storey entrance porch with a tripartite window above, flanked by quoin strips in alternating red brick and sandstone with a frieze above. To either side are three 2-light windows. Slightly projecting end blocks frame tripartite windows similar to the centre on both floors. These end blocks are framed in ashlar pilaster strips with a frieze above. An ashlar-faced parapet steps up over the centre and end blocks. All windows and frames are 20th-century replacements.
The left return has one 3-light first-floor window, and the right return has two 3-light windows on each floor. The rear elevation has similar fenestration to the front, with end blocks defined by quoin strips of alternating brick and ashlar. A door replaces one of the windows to the right of the end block, and a central door is framed by windows and an overlight.
The interior is now largely empty and unused. A spiral iron staircase leads to the first floor. The building originally had two archways leading through it from front to back for delivery vehicles. Brick infill is clearly visible at the rear, showing that the ground-floor windows in the ranges to either side of the centre block are later additions.
The building served as the time office block, where employees clocked in. It is included for its group value as part of the Terry's complex, which comprises headquarters offices, factory, clocktower, time office block, and liquor factory, all built at the same time. The complex presents a unified architectural style reflecting the corporate image and importance of Terry's chocolate firm. The buildings have strong historic interest, representing the most complete surviving expression of York's status in the confectionary business nationally.
