Description

The Press Stand at York Racecourse is a racecourse stand that has been converted into a press stand. It was built around 1890 and has undergone some later alterations. The rear of the building is constructed from orange brick in English garden wall bond, with white brick banding and stone copings. The front features cast-iron columns on stone pedestals that support a shallow hipped slate roof, which is held up by shaped timber brackets and includes cast-iron guttering and terracotta finials.

The exterior has a two-tiered front with four bays defined by columns that have foliate capitals on high pedestals. The lower tier is terraced, while the upper level is separated by a glazed and boarded screen that includes glazed and flush panelled doors, one of which is sliding. The rear of the building has three storeys and five bays, with the bays defined by pilasters and openings set between them in recessed vertical panels. The ground floor has been altered for tote windows. The first floor features four 4-pane sash windows with stone sills and stone keyed flat arches made of rubbed brick, while the fifth window at the right end has been altered. The second floor has 1-pane lights with stone sills and top hung shutters. There are bands of cogged brick above the ground floor openings and at the eaves level. The interior has not been inspected.
