Description
The Old Grand Stand is a fairly large rectangular building constructed in ashlar, dating from around 1775. It is located at the Old Race Course and is recognized as the earliest known grandstand for a race course. The ground floor, which faces the course, features five round-headed arches supported by a Tuscan arcade. Above this, there is a railed balcony that wraps around the building. The upper storey has large round-headed windows that echo the arches below. The flat roof is topped with a balustraded parapet. Inside, there is a spacious upper room that includes two fireplaces and an iron balustrade staircase. Notably, half of the colonnade has been lost, and some openings have been bricked up. The top storey of the Grand Stand was demolished in 1973. The building is part of a visual group that includes the Judge's Box, a smaller stand to the south, and Moor Cottage.
