Description

Aislabeck Reservoir is a water reservoir built in 1812 for Richmond Corporation. It is constructed from coursed square stone. The reservoir collects stream water through a cistern set into the side of a hill, which was previously conveyed to Richmond via lead pipes. The only visible part of the structure is the triangular-sectioned end wall, featuring a plinth with an iron overflow spout that projects from the center into a stone basin with an iron grating at the base, allowing water to be redirected into the stream bed.

Above the spout, there is a rectangular opening approximately 0.75 meters high and 0.5 meters wide, framed by a raised surround with a monolithic lintel that has a semi-circular cut soffit, along with a raised impost band and an iron shutter. On either side of the opening, there are stones inscribed on the left with 'William Close W Denham' and on the right with 'Esq Mayor Chamberlain'. The coping that forms the pediment, along with the impost band, is partially disintegrated, with stones now lying on the ground in front of the cistern.

An inscription on the apex stone, which is also dislodged and on the ground, along with the stone below it, reads: 'This reservoir was erected and lead pipes laid for the conveying of water to the town of Richmond at the expense of the Corporation in the year 1812'.
