Description

The indicator board and clock tower at York Racecourse was built in 1922 and designed by Walter Brierley. It features a steel frame with wooden and re-constituted stone elements, topped with a hipped slate roof. The structure stands three storeys tall with an attic and has a square plan. The ground floor includes square corner piers, with two Doric columns in antis on three sides, all made of re-constituted stone. The first and second floors are divided into three panels on each of the three front faces, with each panel further divided into six spaces for name boards. In the center of each face is a seventh panel located in a central square dormer with a flat lead roof. The main front has attached frames on each side for additional name boards. The square hipped roof is crowned by a square lantern featuring a circular clock face on each side, and a moulded square lead dome topped with a finial. The seven-day clock, made by GJF Newey of York, was installed in 1923. The interior retains all its original structure and fittings.
