Description
Colin Thompson Hall at Loretto School in Millhill, Musselburgh, was built in 1936 by architects Lorimer and Matthew. It is situated on a triangular corner site and features gabled, piended, and semi-conical slate roofs, constructed from snecked rubble with raked joints. The design is symmetrical around the axis through the site corner.
The southeast facade has a central crowstepped gable, which includes a tall architraved window with a balcony on the first floor, positioned above an architraved doorway. This doorway is flanked by small windows that have Lorimer-type depressed ogee heads. The gables are accompanied by lean-to porches within the re-entrant angles, and there are single-storey wings with piended roofs that feature tall dormer-headed windows with curved gablets, which are also repeated on the return ends.
All windows are small paned sashes. The street elevations show that the hall has three dormer-headed windows on each side and an apsidal end below the crowstepped gable, which has a dormer-headed end window flanked by smaller windows. The piended roofed wings have three architraved windows on the flanks and one on the ends. The larger windows are sash windows, all fitted with rectangular leaded lights.
Internally, the hall is barrel vaulted and wood panelled up to the cill level, featuring a proscenium arched platform in the apse.
