Description

Chalmers Hall, located on Main Street in Linlithgow Bridge, was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1907. This single-storey hall features a Voyseyesque Arts and Crafts style and has a T-plan layout, with a lower projecting entrance porch on the north elevation. The hall consists of four bays, with service areas located in a wider block at the rear. The exterior is harled and painted white, complemented by a cream sandstone base course, margins, and the lower half of the porch. The porch and buttresses have battered walls, and there are projecting flat-roofed porches on the north, west, and east elevations, each with a band course at the wallhead. Long ogee-roofed dormer-headed windows are present on each side bay, and the wooden eaves are swept and overhanging.

On the north (street) elevation, the gabled facade features a thermal window above the porch and an arrowslit at the gablehead with a sandstone apex detail. The porch has two-leaf boarded doors on both returns and a window on the north elevation, with a band course at the wallhead that rises in a semi-circular motif over the doors and window. The west side elevation has four symmetrical bays divided by buttresses, with a porch at the re-entrant angle of the T, which includes a door on the north elevation and a window on the side elevation. The east side elevation mirrors the west side but has a later flat-roofed addition on the north elevation of the porch.

The block at the rear has two windows on both the west and east side elevations. The south rear elevation features five bays, with three closely spaced and advanced windows in the center, and a window on both the outer right and left. There is also a modern flat-roofed addition on the left return. The building has 18-pane sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows in the rear block. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring triangular vents on the hall and a piended roof on the rear block, along with rendered stacks. A low sandstone plinth is present at the street level, although the railings have been removed.
