Description
Western Cottage, located at Mains Maltings on Mains Road in Linlithgow, dates from the mid-19th century. It is part of a group that includes three-storey rectangular-plan blocks, which serve as a malting barn and store, flanking a square-plan kiln, with a terrace of cottages to the west. The buildings are constructed from cream sandstone and whinstone rubble, featuring droved ashlar dressings.
The malting barn, store, and kiln include a kiln with a pyramidal roof and a modern ventilator at the apex. The store is situated to the left (east) and is accompanied by a larger barn to the right, which has a gabled facade facing north. The first floor is supported by corbelled dressed quoins, and there is a loading door present. The arrangement of doors and windows is asymmetrical.
The interior of the buildings has been gutted. The roofs are made of grey slate, with ashlar coped skews and skewputts.
The cottages are single storey over a basement, built from whinstone rubble with droved and ashlar cream sandstone dressings. They feature a lintel course and a cornice on the north side, with an asymmetrical arrangement of doors and windows. The slate roof is now almost completely stripped, and there are tall red brick stacks, with a centrally located rendered stack and ashlar coped skews.
