Description

The Old Brewery is a complex of buildings dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries, located on Brewery Lane in Tweedmouth. The structures are primarily built of coursed stone, stone rubble, and some squared stone with varying course depths. The roofs are mainly covered with pantiles, although some sections use Welsh slate.

The west front facing Main Street features a large building that has one storey, a basement, and attic dormers, with five irregular bays made of large squared stonework. This building includes heavy quoins, jambs, and lintels made of pale red sandstone, along with barred openings. A high plain wall connects this structure to Nos 1 and 2 Brewery Bank.

To the north, there is a 19th-century building with smaller, evenly coursed stonework and a wagon entrance in the gable end facing Brewery Lane. A wall with an angled shed inside and a yard entrance extends southeast to two kiln and drying buildings. The first of these is three storeys tall with four bays and a kiln at the north end, while the second is two storeys high, featuring an inverted bay shed with a raised attic and louvred sides. Some 19th-century windows have been inserted, and the stonework is irregular.

A one-storey link connects the buildings westwards to Nos 1 and 2 Brewery Bank. From Brewery Lane, a large kiln building can be seen, which has a pyramidal slated roof topped by a chimney. The entire group of buildings appears complete and forms a picturesque ensemble, enhanced by the sloping site and varied roofline.
