Maltings, 136, 138 Calton Road, Edinburgh

The building at 136-138 Calton Road in Edinburgh is a former brewery maltings from the mid 19th century, with later additions. It is a three-storey structure with a basement and features a double-pitched roof, highlighted by a distinctive pyramidal-roofed kiln that is prominently located on steeply sloping ground west of Campbell's Close. The exterior is constructed of roughly-squared rubble, accented with contrasting red sandstone ashlar dressings.

On the principal north elevation, the projecting kiln is located to the right and has a reconstructed ventilator that is now glazed as a cupola. There are large timber doors on the east side, with timbered dummy hoist platforms above. A timbered balcony projection is situated to the right at the end of the stack. The south elevation is two-storey with an M-pile gable, featuring a timber forestair leading to a door at the first floor, which is flanked by larger windows.

The building predominantly has four-pane glazing in small casement windows, a slate roof, an end stack to the north, coped skews, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior is understood to have been comprehensively refurbished for residential and commercial use.
