65 And 67 (Odd Nos) Canongate, 1 And 2 Brown's Close

97-103 Canongate is a group of residential and commercial blocks designed by Basil Spence, Glover and Ferguson between 1961 and 1969. These buildings are prominently located on the north side of Canongate, with an additional block at Brown's Close. They feature a bold design that combines geometric shapes with traditional materials, characterized by an informal arrangement of monopitch roofs, harled and rubble facings, and a mix of horizontal and vertical windows. The ground floor has slightly projecting segmental-arched canopies and cubic concrete balconies on the side and rear elevations.

The principal elevations of both blocks are four stories high and roughly ten bays wide, with shops on the ground floor. The ground level has openings supported by round columns that lead to segmental-arched canopies, providing access to a courtyard at the rear. The monopitched, harled sections are separated by narrower, squared sections clad in snecked rubble. Some corners feature windows with wide concrete mullions, and there are segmental-arched balconies on the east elevations.

An integral external concrete stairwell is located at the far east, connected by railings to each floor's balcony at the rear of Nos 65-71. Additionally, there is a four-story, four-bay block (No 3 Brown's Close) that defines the east side of the rear courtyard, linking to Nos 65-71 at ground level. The rear courtyard includes landscaping and an earlier cast-iron drinking fountain.
