Description
Nisbet Of Dirleton's House, located at 82 and 84 Canongate in Edinburgh, is a building that was rebuilt in 1954 by Robert Hurd, incorporating some original stonework from a townhouse dating back to 1624. The structure is three stories tall with an attic, featuring crowstepped gables and a shop on the ground floor. It is constructed from roughly squared and snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. There is a broken string course between the ground and first floors, and a corbelled-out oriel window with a blind opening on the far left. To the right, there is a broad crowstepped gabled stair tower with a timber door topped by a thistle finial; above the door is a re-used moulded lintel inscribed with the Latin phrase, 'O Lord I put my trust in thee, let nothing work me harm'. The rear elevation is plain, harled, and features irregular fenestration.
The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows with horns, along with 6-pane timber sash and case windows in the stair tower. There is a tall and narrow end stack to the east, made of clay cans.
