Description
Morocco Land, located at 265-267 Canongate in Edinburgh, is a late 17th or early 18th century tenement that was rebuilt by Robert Hurd between 1956 and 1957. This four-storey building, with an attic, features a four-bay design and includes a shop on the ground floor. It has a central wallhead gable with an apex stack and flanking dormers, as well as a central segmental-arched pend to the right. The exterior is constructed of random rubble with polished dressings, while the ground floor is finished in ashlar. A string course runs between the ground and first floors. The building is regularly fenestrated, with windows that have raised margins, chamfered openings, and relieving arches. Notably, there is an earlier carved effigy located to the left between the first and second floors.
At the rear, there is a six-storey, four-bay rendered block that includes a projecting two-bay stair tower and an additional two-storey section. The front of the building features timber sash and case windows with lying-pane glazing, consisting of four-pane upper sashes and six-pane lower sashes. The rear has tilt and pivot metal-framed glazing, while the shop front is fitted with plate glass. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slate, with slated dormer cheeks and a coped skewtable. The building has coped end stacks with clay cans.
