Description
The Wiremill Men's Social Club, located at 4 Balcarres Road in Musselburgh, was designed by Hippolyte J Blanc in 1885, with later alterations by Richardson and McKay in 1937 and additional modifications in the mid to late 20th century. This single-storey building, with part attic, features an irregular-plan Free Early Renaissance style and was originally a golf club house situated opposite the Musselburgh links golf course.
The exterior showcases tall, steeply pitched stone gable pediments. The principal gables are adorned with tripartite transomed and mullioned windows, including a segmental arched tympanum with an inscribed panel (BLGC) on the east side and a squared triangular pedimented panel with curved details and a golfing crest on the south gable. A semi-dodecagonal bay window is topped with a semi-prismatic roof. The entrance is marked by an ornate open and glazed carved timber porch, featuring Jacobean pilasters flanking a segmental arch and decorative half-timber fretwork at the apex. The building is constructed of squared red sandstone with round chamfered dressings, and it has a large flat-roofed extension at the rear.
The entrance door is a timber panelled bi-fold design, and the windows are fixed timber casements with 6-pane lights above. The roof is covered in slate with clay tile ridges, and there are shouldered wallhead and gable apex stacks with cornice and moulded cappings, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
The boundary walls are low, made of coursed sandstone with chamfered caps, and there are remnants of decorative railings at the pedestrian gateway.
Inside, a fire around the year 2000 caused the loss of some original interior detailing, but some window joinery and the internal layout remain intact. The main club room features an arch leading to the bay window with margined timber panelling and a very deep plain cornice. The billiard room has timber tongue and groove panelling and a plain corniced coffered ceiling, while the later 20th-century hall at the rear has plain detailing.
