Description
The bandstand at Magdalen Green in Dundee was designed by Walter MacFarlane and Co from the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow and completed in 1889. It features an ornate octagonal plan set on a concrete moulded base. The structure is supported by cast-iron columns with Corinthianesque capitals at the corners, which hold up cusped segmentally arched cast-iron spandrels decorated with intricate traceried open work. An elaborate frieze with leaf motifs masks the angles, and there is a projecting cornice adorned with pierced iron antefixae. The roof is an ogee dome made of metal, featuring a pendant arched valence in the middle and topped with a tall cast and wrought-iron crown finial. Surrounding the bandstand are arabesque cast-iron railings.
