Description
The bandstand in Queen's Park was built in 1891 and features ironwork supplied by Walter MacFarlane & Co. from the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow. It has a rendered and colorwashed brick plinth that supports a cast-iron and timber superstructure topped with a leaded roof. The bandstand is octagonal in shape.
On the east side, there are six steps with a cast-iron balustrade leading up to the stage. The roof is supported by eight cast-iron columns, each with octagonal plinths, reeded circular bases, and circular shafts. The columns feature Ionic capitals, from which scrolled arches rise to the wall plate, adorned with cast-iron infill that includes harps and scrolled consoles.
Between the columns, there is a balustrade made of wavy square-section verticals set between straight stiles, with double top and bottom rails. Each casting consists of three sections: the outer sections have centrally-placed foliated sun bosses, while the inner section features a central square panel with a circular foliage design and flower spandrels in the corners. The stair balustrade mirrors the pattern of the outer sections.
The timber roof is embellished with wrought-iron scrolled devices on each facet and topped with a central wrought-iron lantern.
