Description
The entrance archway at Kensal Green Cemetery, located opposite Wellington Road, was built between 1832 and 1834 by John Griffith for the General Cemetery Company. It is constructed from Portland stone, with some rendered brick additions. The arch features a central arched opening that is coffered inside, flanked by fluted Doric columns and topped with an attic. The side sections have blind windows that open to the rear, with pylon-shaped designs on the ground floor and square shapes on the first floor, accented by pilasters at the ends. A continuous Doric frieze runs along the top. The chimneys have been lowered in recent years. The entrance is adorned with cast iron gates that have spearhead finials. There are single-storey extensions on each side of the arch, which include offices on the west side (significantly extended in the 20th century) and former superintendent's quarters on the east side. The interior of the arch also contains living quarters.
