Description
The Old School, located at 2 Main Street in Elrig, is a former school and adjoining schoolhouse built in the later 19th century. It is a two-storey building, with the first floor breaking the eaves, and features a traditional three-bay design typical of Wigtown houses. A single-storey school is attached to the south, forming an L-plan layout. The exterior is finished in painted rubble.
On the east elevation, which is the principal side, the house is on the right and has a central door with windows in the outer bays at ground level. The first floor features windows set in gabled dormerheads. To the left is the school section, which has a window to the right and a gable to the left, with a lean-to addition that includes doors on both the north and south sides.
The south elevation has three regularly spaced classroom windows, while the north elevation is gabled and blank.
The building features timber sash and case windows, with four-pane glazing in the house and mainly plate-glass glazing in the two-light windows of the school. The roof has red sandstone coped skews and painted rubble stacks with red sandstone copes; the house has a gablehead stack, while the school has a ridge stack on the north jamb. The roof is primarily covered with small grey slates, although the south pitch of the school has modern roofing. The east elevation has rubble coped walls.
