Description

This public house, located at 20 and 22 Main Street in Balerno, dates from around 1850. It is a two-storey, three-bay building with a near-symmetrical rectangular plan, now featuring a lower two-bay block attached at an angle to the left. The exterior is constructed of rubble with painted ashlar margins and droved dressings, and it has raised quoins and raised cills.

On the northeast elevation, there are three near-symmetrical bays. The entrance is off-centre to the right, featuring an earlier 20th-century narrow two-leaf wooden door with a glazed upper panel, and there is a wooden painted shop sign above it. To the immediate left of the door is a window, while to the right is a blocked narrow door, and between the two outer right bays is another blocked door. The first floor has windows that are near-symmetrically disposed, and there are two gabled dormers that are symmetrically arranged.

The lower two-bay single-storey block, which has a pantiled roof, follows the street pattern to the outer left, and its roof level may have been altered. There is a deep-set door to the outer right, which is a two-leaf boarded door. To the outer left, there are paired doors with a dividing wooden jamb; one is a boarded door with a three-pane upper panel, and the other is a four-panelled door with a glazed overdoor featuring a border and a wooden lintel. Above the doors, there is a blocked opening at the centre.

The building features four-pane sash and case windows, with the ground floor windows being etched and consisting of two panes over plate glass, which are barred with brass bars internally. The roof is covered with grey slate and has ashlar coping to the skews, along with broad, rendered and coped apex stacks. The two-bay block has a pantiled roof with a stone ridge, and there is cement mortar at the junction with the main building. The interior was not seen in 1993.
