Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 4 Main Street in Balerno, was designed by David J Chisholm and completed in 1938. This single-storey and attic, five-bay rectangular-plan bank features painted harl with ashlar margins and dressings, as well as chamfered reveals. It has a deep base course, rusticated quoins, and an eaves cornice.

On the northeast elevation, there are three bays with a central door flanked by narrow windows and large windows in the outer bays. A modern fascia sign runs directly under the eaves. The roof has three large square dormers grouped at the center.

The southeast elevation has a steep gable with a flat-roofed projection on the outer left. There is a window to the left of center at ground level and a cash-point machine in a recess immediately to the outer left.

The northwest elevation also features a steep gable, with a window at ground level on the outer left and a narrow window to the right at the gablehead, which has a raised cill.

The southwest (rear) elevation is three-bay with a taller, half-pitched roof addition at the center. It includes a date plaque from 1938 with a moulded surround, a large window to the outer left, a window at ground level on the outer right with a square dormer above, and a ground-level window in the outer left bay.

The windows include 6-pane over plate glass sash and case windows, 4-pane over plate glass flanking the door, and 12-pane sash and case dormers. The steep, graded grey slate roof features ashlar coping to the skews with scrolled skewputts, an ashlar ridge, and rendered, coped apex stacks.

The boundary wall is a low stugged squared and snecked red sandstone wall with slab coping that curves to the left of the building along Deanpark Brae.
