Description

The Clydesdale Bank, located at 28 and 30 West High Street in Crieff, was built in 1868. This three-storey, five-bay classical bank features a small tenement above. The exterior is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked rubble, accented with contrasting raised ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a deep ashlar base course, cill courses, a ground floor cornice and frieze, an eaves course, and a heavily mutuled cornice. The first floor windows are framed by corniced architraved surrounds.

On the northeast elevation, there is a broad bay to the right of center, which has steps and flanking dwarf walls leading to a corniced doorpiece. This doorpiece features paired engaged pilasters, a two-leaf panelled timber door, and a deep plate glass fanlight, with flanking pilasters that have inset narrow lights. To the left of this bay are two windows, with the outer left window altered to include a cash machine and a rectangular ironwork night deposit box beyond. The bay to the right has a timber door with a plate glass fanlight and an adjacent window to the left. The fenestration above is regular and reduces in size on each floor.

The northwest elevation, facing Galvelmore Street, has a gabled design with No 32 adjoining at ground level, and each floor above features a window in the outer bays.

The building primarily uses plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows and is topped with grey slates. The chimney stacks are made of coped ashlar with rectangular cans.

Inside, the banking hall has been modernized but retains a screen door, plain cornices, and timber shutters. No 30 features decorative plasterwork cornicing and a ceiling rose.
