Description

Crieff Library, located on Comrie Street in Crieff, was built in 1816 by mason James Marshall and wright John Keay, with alterations and additions made in 1888. This two-storey, six-bay building features classical detailing and is designed as a Masonic Hall, situated on a site that slopes to the west. The exterior includes narrow bull-faced bands with contrasting ashlar dressings, and the entrance front is made of ashlar, featuring a ground floor shop and a blocking course.

On the south elevation facing West High Street, there is a central door flanked by three windows on the left and two closely aligned windows on the right, with an additional opening further to the right. The first floor has six large windows, each topped with an ashlar panel. The third bay features a tablet inscribed with 'MASON'S HALL', while the fifth and sixth bays are located under stepped eaves.

The east elevation on Comrie Street has a two-bay design, with the main door, now leading to the Library, set back to the right. This entrance features a Doric-columned doorpiece with decorated capitals and a cornice, leading to a shallow first floor with a small central window, narrow flanking lights (which may be blocked), and a deep blocking course inscribed in Gothic tombstone-type lettering with 'St Michael's Lodge 1816'. To the left, there is a shop with a pilastered doorway, a two-leaf panelled timber door, and a screen door with a sunburst fanlight. The shop window is angled to the right, and there are two irregular fixed display windows to the left, along with a deep fascia and cornice that lead to two first-floor windows. A full-height pilaster is located on the outer left.

The west elevation features 20th-century extensions. The building has timber sash and case windows with 4- and 12-pane glazing patterns, a grey slate roof, and coped ashlar and render stacks with a full complement of cans. The interior was not seen in 2001.
