Description
The Strathearn Institute is a late 19th-century, three-storey and attic, two-bay commercial building with residential spaces above, situated in an irregular terrace and featuring a pavilion roof. The structure is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, accented with contrasting ashlar dressings. It has band and eaves courses, and a corniced and consoled pilastered doorpiece that includes a segmental-headed door with a roll-moulded doorcase, along with corbels and stone mullions.
On the east elevation, there is a slightly advanced bay to the right, which features a corbelled cornice, a part-glazed timber door, and narrow lights on either side under a consoled cornice. The upper floors have tripartite windows with a pedimented corbelled bipartite window above, which breaks into the pavilion roof. The left bay has a deep-set two-leaf panelled timber door with flanking canted lights at ground level, a four-light canted window above, and two closely-aligned windows on the second floor, topped with two timber-pedimented dormers.
The south elevation includes a lower adjoining building at ground level, a second-floor window to the outer right, and a broad gablehead stack above. The building features modern glazing and a pavilion roof covered with grey slates arranged in a banded diamond pattern. Coped ashlar stacks and ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts complete the exterior.
