Description

32 James Square in Crieff is a former bank building constructed in 1874, with a late 20th century extension. This three-storey, three-bay structure showcases a French classical style, featuring a Corinthian portico, a crested pavilion roof, a stone balustrade, and decorative brattishing. It is located on a corner site that slopes steeply to the south. The building is characterized by narrow bands of bull-faced ashlar with contrasting polished ashlar dressings, and includes a base, cill and eaves courses, along with a deep cornice. The pilaster quoins are channelled at the ground level. The first-floor windows on the north and northeast sides are adorned with consoled pediments, pilasters, and aprons, and have stone mullions.

On the north elevation, which faces James Square, the central bay at ground level provides disabled access to the portico, which features a mutule cornice and a segmental-headed centre with a blocking course that includes a cartouche. There are bipartite windows in the flanking bays and regular fenestration on each floor above, with the second-floor windows being smaller.

The northeast corner elevation has a bay on the right with a single window on each floor and a curved pavilion roof behind the stone balustrade. The left bay contains bipartite windows on each floor and a chimneyed gable above the cornice.

The east elevation, facing King Street, features a bipartite window at ground level with a single window above on each floor.

The south elevation shows evidence of an earlier structure at ground level, with random rubble and raggle, leading to two windows on each floor above. There is a modern multi-pane glazed polygonal stair tower on the outer left.

The west elevation has later low wings projecting from the outer bays at ground level, with a window at the centre that leads to a corbelled wide-centre tripartite oriel with a slated roof and brattishing, along with flanking windows on the first floor. The second floor has regular fenestration.

The building features modern glazing, grey slates with a fishscale pattern on the curved pavilion roof, and cavetto-coped, banded ashlar stacks with cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts.
