Murray Fountain, James Square, Crieff

The Murray Fountain, located in James Square, Crieff, was designed by sculptor William Mossman and dates from 1893, with installation completed in 1894. It is a three-stage classical memorial fountain made of grey and red granite, featuring marble basins. The fountain has a reducing stepped base that leads to a plinth with central basins and a dog drinking bowl at the eastern angle, topped by a projecting moulded ledge.

The second stage features a tall base with lead lionhead waterspouts set in small niches on each face. The northern face has an inscription that reads, "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE BURGH OF CRIEFF" and "A RECOGNITION OF MANY BENEFITS RECEIVED FROM THE MURRAYS OF OCHTERTYRE." This stage is adorned with keystoned arches and marble pilasters with floral capitals, supporting a central fountain bowl that transitions into an elaborate cornice. The heavy third stage is decorated with fish tails that form the support for a ball finial and a decorative cast-iron weathervane. The fountain was renovated in 1993.
