Watson Fountain, Cadzow Street, Hamilton

Watson Fountain, located on Cadzow Street in Hamilton, was built in 1893 and designed by architect Gavin Paterson from Hamilton, with sculptural work by Killock Brown from Glasgow. The fountain is made of finely finished grey granite ashlar, featuring polished pink and grey granite columns. It has an octagonal base with shell-head niches that contain bowls, alternating with relief panels, one of which depicts a portrait of Mr. Watson. The structure includes an open peristyle supported by eight granite columns that hold up an entablature with a fluted frieze. Atop the fountain is an ashlar fish scale dome with a bell profile and a circular finial. Inside the peristyle, there is a seated figure representing 'Industry,' holding a pick and a blow lamp.
