Description

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Cadzow Street in Hamilton was built in 1846 and showcases an Early English architectural style. The church features a finely stugged ashlar gablet front, while the rest of the building is constructed from rubble. The nave and aisles have a gable front that includes a Y-mullioned doorway beneath a band of crenellation. Above the doorway is a three-light Geometrical window with a quatrefoil over interlocked double-Y tracery, complete with a hood mould that has head label stops. The building is flanked by T-plan buttresses with shafted angles that rise into octagonal shapes and culminate in gablet pinnacles adorned with cusped arched panels. The aisles are characterized by tall splayed lancets set in pointed recesses, corbelled parapets, and angle buttresses.

To the left, there is a single-storey entrance outshot. The flanks of the church are unbuttressed and consist of five bays with two-light Y-traceried windows. The roof is slated and features five wooden ventilators from the Edwardian period. Inside, the church is galleried on three sides with curved angles at the sanctuary, supported by simple cast iron stanchions. The altar area is niched and has a cusped three gablet canopy, with marble lining added in 1857, and flanking geometrical windows with two lights. The roof is made of dark pine and has a braced collar and king post design with a low pitch.
