Description

Martyrs Church in Broomlands, Paisley, was built in 1847 and features a rectangular plan with five bays, a nave, and aisles, along with a vestry at the rear. The church underwent additions and alterations between 1904 and 1905, designed by architect T.G. Abercrombie. The earlier structure is made of snecked rubble with ashlar margins, while the later additions are constructed from snecked stugged ashlar with polished dressings.

The south front of the church showcases a neo-Norman style, highlighted by an advanced buttressed center bay that features a round-arched doorway with three orders, supported by nook shafts and flanked by round-headed sidelights. Above this doorway is a cill band with triple lights that exhibit Romanesque detailing, topped with a cross finial at the gable head. The right aisle end has two small stair windows.

To the left, there is a tower with clasping buttresses and a string course that curves over a flat-headed slit window. Near the top of the tower, there is a paired window with a colonnette. The west elevation of the tower includes a three-window arcade at the ground level and a Romanesque window above it. The aisles are adorned with round-headed windows featuring 'Y'-tracery, and the building has an eaves band and a slate roof.

Attached to the rear of the nave are offices and halls that are two storeys high and consist of two bays, constructed from snecked rubble with ashlar margins, including at the angles. The porch is coped and features a round-headed doorway, along with an eaves band and slate roof. Inside, the church has galleries on three sides supported by cast-iron colonnettes.
