Description
The John Neilson Institution, located on Oakshaw Road in Paisley, was built in 1849 and designed by architect Charles Wilson. This single-storey school features an Italianate style and has a basically square plan, constructed from ashlar stone with a base course.
The east elevation consists of nine bays, with the central three bays projecting to create an open portico supported by round-headed arches. The outer bays contain round-headed windows that are similarly detailed, featuring consoled cills and recessed aprons. A continuous cornice runs along the top, with a pediment above the center and parapets on the sides. The side and rear elevations are treated in a similar manner, although the windows are located in the center bays. Additional doors or windows can be found in the center bays of the south and north elevations, while the west elevation is obscured by later additions. The building has a low slate roof adorned with four corniced ventilators.
A central octagonal drum rises behind the pediment, featuring four balustraded facets alternating with four abutments that support stylized urns. Above this is a circular drum that carries an elongated flat-topped ribbed dome.
Inside, the institution has an octagonal central hall with coupled Roman Doric pilasters that support arches, leading into vaulted corners and classrooms. The drum is decorated with moulded panels and oculi, some of which are blind while others are glazed, and features a ribbed dome above with moulded panels and blind oculi, topped by a glazed oculus at the crown.
The entrance lodge is a simplified Italianate structure, also single-storey and built of ashlar. Its entrance front has outer blind bays and a slightly advanced three-bay center with a pediment. The door is flanked by windows, and there is an elaborate arched bellcote at the apex. The building is encircled by a base course, impost moulding, and an eaves cornice. All gables are pedimented, and additional arched windows are present on the remaining elevations. The roof is piended slate with a central corniced stack. The property is also marked by four square, corniced ashlar gatepiers and cast iron railings.
