Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1849 by C&J Trubshaw. It features roughly coursed and squared rubble with a scallop tiled roof. The church is designed in an Early English style and includes a southwest tower, a nave with two lean-to aisles, a dormered clerestorey, and a chancel.
On the exterior, there is a west door at the base of the tower, and southwest doors that are steeply moulded. Above these doors are paired windows, along with a clock and paired bell chamber lights in the upper stage. The church has an embattled parapet with angle pinnacles, and although a spire was planned, it was never built. The aisles are divided into five bays, with four on the south side, each featuring a lancet window. The roof has three steep gabled dormers with lancet lights, and there is a vestry to the northeast. The chancel has a stepped triple lancet window.
Inside, the nave consists of five bays supported by cylindrical piers with stiffleaf capitals. There is a western gallery adorned with trefoiled traceried panels and a cast-iron rail. The roof is arched and braced, with high set collars that carry king posts, and it features patterned stained glass. Notable fittings include a font with blind trefoiled arcading on a bowl supported by clustered shafts, and an elaborate woodwork lectern.
