Description
Brunswick House, formerly known as Brunswick Methodist Church, is a Methodist church that has been converted for use as offices. It was built in 1823, with later 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick and features a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has a five-window range, with three central bays that are advanced and topped with a pediment.
The entrance porch projects forward and is defined by Doric pilasters that frame three doors, with the central door set in a bowed porch. The doors are six-panelled and have fanlights above them. The upper storey is also articulated by pilasters, creating an arcade of round-arched windows with radial glazing, while the central window features a stressed stone architrave. The words "Wesleyan Methodist Chapel" are inscribed on a stone in the pediment. A moulded cornice runs across the seven-bay return to Lord Street.
The northern return has five bays, with a pediment over the advanced central bays. It includes round-arched windows with red brick dressings and continuous stone sills, also featuring radial glazing.
Inside, the church has a gallery supported by fluted cast-iron Doric columns, with the gallery front designed as a Doric entablature. The ceiling is coffered, and there are wooden pews, along with an organ and pulpit dating from around 1860.
