Description

Nos. 51 and 53 Chapel Street, along with No. 38 High Street, form a group of three houses built around 1830. They feature Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof. The buildings are two stories high, with a six-window range facing Chapel Street and a three-window return to High Street, one of which is a blind window. The houses are designed differently to fit the corner site: No. 51 has a single-unit double pile plan, while No. 53 has a two-unit, single-depth plan. No. 38 High Street follows a single-unit, double-depth plan.

No. 51 has a doorway on the right side, while No. 53 has a central door. The houses are separated at ground floor level by a passage leading to the rear. They feature six-panelled doors with radial fanlights set in reeded architraves within stepped brick arches. There is a plain plank door with a radial fanlight leading to the central passage. The windows are 16-pane sashes, with 12-pane sashes above the doorways, and stone sills that create a continuous band at the first floor, topped with stone voussoir heads. No. 38 High Street has a similar doorcase with a blind window above, and the right-hand windows on each floor have been renewed. The buildings have axial stacks.
