Description
The former dye houses, built in the late 19th century, are located on the north side of Waterside in Macclesfield. They are constructed of brick and feature asbestos sheet roofs with slatted clerestoreys. The buildings consist of three gabled, single-storey structures, each with a wedge-shaped ground plan and a single chamber. Decorative brickwork creates recessed panels on each gable end. Originally part of a mill complex that produced handkerchiefs in the early 20th century, these dye houses included vats and a laboratory. They are notable as a rare example of a building type and industrial practice that was once common in Macclesfield, playing an important role in the silk industry.
