Description
56 and 58 Mill Lane is a pair of houses with weavers' garrets, dating from around 1850, and currently used in part for commercial purposes. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a Welsh slate roof. They rise to three storeys with an attic, presenting a four-window range that includes late 19th-century shop fronts on the ground floor, supported by moulded console brackets that hold a continuous fascia. There is a central passage entry. The outer upper windows are 16-pane sashes, while the inner windows are 12-pane sashes, all featuring flat-arched finely gauged brick heads. The upper storey has sash windows with 9 and 12 panes. Projecting eaves are supported by console brackets. The weaver's garret in the roof is illuminated by a continuous clerestorey with horizontally sliding sash windows. The buildings have end wall stacks and are noted as the only local example of this specific design that combines a house and workshop.
