Description
The fountain at the Head Gardener's House in Buxley, Manderston House, was designed by John Kinross and dates from 1897. It is made of ashlar stone and features a granite basin, inspired by a similar fountain at Ravelston House in Edinburgh from 1630. The fountain has a tall shaft that stands on two circular plinths, with a moulded base. The lower shaft is polygonal and moulded, supporting a gadrooned basin. The upper shaft is ornately decorated with strapworked date panels at the base, and carved dolphins that appear to tumble down each face, above which is a low-relief swagged festoon. At the top, the fountain is crowned by a unicorn holding a heraldic shield.
