Drinking Fountain, Market Square, Stonehaven

The drinking fountain located in Market Square, Stonehaven, was built in 1897 and is made of polished granite. It is a small, free-standing Gothic-style drinking fountain designed in the shape of a baptismal font, featuring a circular bowl on an octagonal pier with scroll supports at its splayed faces. Above the bowl is a corniced, open square columned canopy, with each face displaying a round arch and decoratively-tooled spandrels. These are supported by a central column and four corner colonettes that have stiff-leaf capitals. At the top, there is an ornamental pyramidal spirelet rising from decoratively-tooled gablets, with the east gablet inscribed with '1897 Presented to the Town of Stonehaven by George Barrie, Law Agent and Notary Public, Edinburgh.' The fountain also has a tooled band course and a square-plan stiff-leaf capital capped by a metal colonette, which was likely intended for a gas lamp that is now missing.

Adjacent to the fountain is a horse trough, which is plain and rectangular in shape, made of granite and set on a stand, with a rectangular bowl beneath. It is supported by two pink granite supports and features two freestanding bollards.
