Royal Hotel, Allardice Street, Stonehaven

The Royal Hotel, located on Allardice Street in Stonehaven, dates from around 1900 and has undergone later alterations and additions. This three-storey and attic hotel features a two-bay terraced design with broad oriel bays and mock half-timbering. It is constructed from finely droved sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. The building has a bracketed cornice at the ground floor, as well as cornices for the first and second floors, with the second floor's cornice incorporated into the eaves cornice. Stone transoms and mullions are present, along with raked cills.

On the west (principal) elevation, the ground floor includes two fixed windows, each featuring a serpentine timber transom and two mullions, flanked by a two-leaf panelled timber door on the outer left and an altered entrance on the outer right. Each bay on the first and second floors has a pair of 5-light shallow canted transomed windows, leading to a decorative metalwork parapet that displays the lettering 'ROYAL HOTEL'. Above, there are two 5-light dormer windows with half-timbered gableheads.

The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are broad coped ashlar stacks topped with a full complement of polygonal cans. The building also features ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts and decorative bargeboarding.
